St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest permanently settled city in America, which means that its history is ripe with legends of mysterious locations and figures. Originally established by the Spanish, much darkness reigns over the area. Unexplained occurrences and sightings have been reported there, even into the present. Castillo de San Marcos is a fort where the original settlers were based. Being a coastal location, the local lighthouse has seen its fair share of ghostly activity, including weird lights and an overall feeling of unease. Arguably the city’s most haunted location, Old Jail relates to the tough times faced in the past, with unexplained sounds and humanoid apparitions seen that date back to its heyday as a prison from centuries past. Now a shell of its former self, Castillo de San Marcos sits near water’s edge as a living relic from its time as a military fortress. Reports of colonial soldiers and ancient rulers are quite common, as is the phantom scent of perfume in the air. One under-the-radar paranormal hotspot is the local Ripley’s Museum. This mecca for all things unexplained makes perfect sense for its odd reports and incidences and actually is quite haunted on the inside.
