Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is a small town in the mid-Atlantic that has seen its fair share of history and tragedy. One of the bloodiest and deadliest Civil War battles took place there. With all this, it’s no wonder that many people widely consider this quaint city to be one of the most haunted locations in America. Key haunted sites include the Jennie Wade House, Sachs Covered Bridge, Gettysburg Orphanage, Farnsworth House Inn, Dobbin House Taven, and even Gettysburg College. Paranormal accounts detail anything from sightings of the spirits of long-dead soldiers and innocent civilians to strange smells and sounds heard echoing.
Jennie Wade House, though not the actual residence of the only civilian casualty of the Civil War, often reports her eerie presence. She was calmly baking bread for hungry people, while waiting for her soldier boyfriend to return. Reports of cold spots, shadows, and actual re-enactments of her death are commonplace in the kitchen. The bullet hole from her fatal projectile is still visible on the door.
Historic Sachs Covered Bridge is a passage tunnel that’s considered to be haunted, due to its past tales that mention 3 deserters being hung from within. Other reports include ghostly apparitions, cigar smoke smells, and occasional battle cries lingering from a dark time.
Gettysburg Orphanage (aka National Homestead) is infamous for its eerie accounts of the spirits of children who were badly abused inside. Often heard are mysterious footsteps and disembodied laughter.
Farnsworth House Inn, now a popular bed & breakfast, once served as a sanctuary or hiding spot for Confederate snipers in the attic. Also having been used as a makeshift hospital for the wounded, active spirits abound throughout the building on all floors.
Dobbin House Tavern continues to operate as a local watering hole, where guests and staff alike all report sightings of its original owner and a Confederate soldier.
Gettysburg College remains a small private university that was actually built on the site of the infamous battlefield. Around the campus, phantom soldiers are witnessed in various rooms and walking through its historic walls.
