Pemba Island sits in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of the African nation of Tanzania. Swahili lore has long told of intense supernatural and witchcraft energy and spirits. The natives have believed in these practices for centuries, and healers and witch doctors are often depended on to provide various rituals and charms to ward off evil demonic spirits said to rule the land. The primary legend is of a bat-like cryptid creature known as Popobawa, which is commonly thought to have been created circa 1972 after the brutal assassination of Tanzania’s first president. Claims are that the monstrous figure is his vengeful ghost, summoned to paralyze locals with the fear of being violently controlled. There’s also a massive cult, or “shetani”, that strongly feels like Popobawa resides alongside the population and has been portrayed in wood carvings, although not visible to the naked eye. These otherworldly tormentors are shapeshifters that can appear in various forms. Shamans around the island advise people to set charmed items beside various fig trees, exorcise, and sacrifice goats as a means of protecting themselves, their loved ones, and their homes. These beliefs are taken quite seriously, although sounding a bit outlandish. What is true is that this region is home to many of the world’s biggest and wildest animals, and the island is fairly remote. So anything’s possible.
