Shane Road Tracks have been the site of an eerie San Antonio legend for nearly a century. It’s been widely reported that a fiery collision occurred between a school bus full of kids as it allegedly got stuck while crossing the train tracks at the intersection of Villamain Road. Many people have gone there and discovered that if you park your vehicle on the tracks and pour baby powder on the back windshield and bumper, that unseen forces will push the vehicle safely across the intersection before an oncoming train can hit it. In addition, you may see small handprints left on the rear of the car as proof that ghost children have come to the rescue. While it’s crystal clear upon reaching the spot that a fast-moving train can easily sneak up on you around a blind corner of brush, the legend may actually not be as accurate as most people think. What appears to be an uphill climb in the road is really a downward slope that deceives the eye and the brain, due to uneven lines in the surrounding terrain. In addition, while the site is in San Antonio, Texas, the actual crash took place in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 1, 1937. However, it received widespread media coverage as far as 1,000 miles away, so the story was believed to happen several states away. As far as the baby powder experiment, what most people fail to realize is that many of the marks and prints on their cars were there beforehand, as a result of poor cleaning.
