New and unusual creatures and species are being discovered all the time. No place on Earth is more conducive to hiding unknown animals than the Amazon Rainforest. Back when dinosaurs roamed, the giant ground sloth also called parts of South America home. But is it possible that a modern version still exists today? In remote regions of Brazil and other neighboring countries, legends of Mapinguari have been passed down for generations, concentrated heavily throughout the 1900s. However, this particular cryptid does have some rather odd characteristics. For one, it’s said to only have a single eye and a large opening like a mouth in its abdomen. Another possibility is that this “mouth” may, in fact, be a pouch, like marsupials have. Much like many other forest dwellers, a putrid odor is one of its calling cards. The smell is so bad that it’s known to actually render people who get too close unconscious. Mapinguari is believed to be a protector of its forest habitat. The existence of this bizarre animal may seem pretty far-fetched, but it may still be out there just waiting to be found. Other species have been discovered in the same region, so who’s to say this one may be as well?
