The Underground Edinburgh Vaults were constructed in the late 1780s underneath South Bridge, initially to be used for storage and workshops by various tradesman, who sold wine and textiles. Unfortunately, the tunnels were filled with moisture and lacked adequate airflow, which led public workers to outright flee within 30 years of the grand opening. After sitting idle, these vaults ended up as a hideout/refuge for the less fortunate as well as more nefarious characters for purposes of distributing illegal moonshine, casinos, human/corpse trafficking, and attempting to escape the Irish Potato Famine.
This area was sealed off in the middle of the 1800s to keep those with certain ulterior motives from entering. For nearly a century, the tunnels were basically forgotten, until a chance excavation in 1985 re-opened them to the general public to conduct legit businesses and perform paranormal tours.
