Atchison, Kansas is a lesser-known part of small-town middle America but packs a huge punch, in terms of paranormal history and activity. Its primary location is the infamous Sallie House. Other reportedly haunted locations include McInteer Villa, which is open for overnight stays for ghosthunters; as well as Cray Historical Home; RavenHearse Manor; Maple House of the Dead; Glick and Brown Mansions; Benedictine College; and Beaumont Hotel.
Sallie House is a small former residence that’s even considered to be one of the most haunted houses in Kansas, if not America. Its story centers around a young girl named Sallie, who’s said to have died in the house while being operated on after being run over just outside in the 1870s. Visitors and ghosthunters alike have frequently reported being mysteriously scratched to bleeding, moving objects, and unexplained noises. The house has even been featured on television and video on many occasions.
Cray Historical Home is an ancient mansion that was first built in 1882. Local lore tells of a woman named Clara, who died there. Visitors report seeing her figure, experiencing cold spots, and hearing weeping and/or footsteps.
McInteer Villa was constructed by John P. McInteer in the 1880s and has its own collection of paranormal legends.
RavenHearse Manor was built in 1884. This enormous mansion has its own dark history of hauntings and even vampires that spans several families and generations.
Maple House of the Dead is a creepy old house that currently sits on a plot of land where an old cemetery once sat. Even eerier is that this graveyard still today has bodies buried that remain unaccounted-for, leading to intense haunting activity.
Glick Mansion houses a bed & breakfast inn (known as “Tuck U Inn B&B”). This historic home was built in 1973, specifically for its namesake, former Kansas Governor George Glick. The building features unique architecture and serves as a charming local lodging option with gourmet breakfasts and its own ghosts.
Brown Mansion, which is actually in a nearby town, is famous for its ornate architecture; verandas; and historical significance. The grounds are quite popular for its tours and even ghost stories.
Benedictine College is a small Catholic liberal arts university that was formerly for women only. This school of higher learning has many legends of hauntings, with reported paranormal activity like flickering lights in Memorial Hall; ghost sightings in McDonald Hall; and creepy occurrences in Cray Seaberg Hall’s basement.
Beaumont Hotel sits in a historic building that’s become well-known for spirits that linger within its walls. Previously a railroad hotel that was originally constructed in 1879, it originally opened and operated as the Summit Hotel.
