Japan’s Aokigahara Forest

Aokigahara Forest in Japan is a dense thicket of trees at the base of Mount Fuji. Also referred to as “Suicide Woods” or “Sea of Trees”, this area has gained a dark reputation. The melancholy moniker is all too real for so many depressed people that have ventured there. Local lore swears that the forest is haunted by the trapped souls of those who went there to end their own seemingly desolate lives. Prior to visiting the grounds, ominous warnings are given because of the tragic and somber nature of the region. Japanese legend strongly believes that countless yūrei, or ghosts, continue to haunt and torment those who happen to venture inside. Feelings of extreme anxiety tend to overcome living visitors, due to the strange formations in the landscape. It’s very easy to get lost there, and the silent isolation definitely has a creep factor.
