Villisca Axe Murder House was the site of a grisly event in June 1912. On that fateful night, an entire family was brutally murdered as they slept. What makes this mystery even stranger is that we still do not know with absolute certainty today who the killer was. Going back further, the house was originally built in 1868 for a man named George Loomis in a quiet small town in Iowa. Then, in 1903, another couple, Josiah and Sarah Moore, purchased the house for themselves and their family to live in. The Moore family had 4 children, all of whom were bludgeoned to death on that summer night in 1912, along with 2 other juvenile houseguests who had been spending the night. The case has been likened to be similar in magnitude to the more recent O.J. Simpson murder trial. The house is relatively small on the interior, with multiple levels but only a few rooms. It’s widely believed that the suspect had been hiding in the cramped attic, completely unknown to anyone else in the house at the time. Some likely suspects include a local businessman, a high priest, and a transient serial killer. In the 1990s, the house was restored to its former glory by the new owners. Today, it remains a very popular tourist attraction and National Historic Site on the registry. Paranormal investigators and enthusiasts flock there to try their hand at potentially figuring out the truth of the matter. Children’s voices, strange lights, shadow figures, and full apparitions are often reported by staff and visitors alike. One key element that heightens the fear factor is the house’s current lack of indoor plumbing. Today, it remains one of the most haunted locations in America. Many people have their own theories of who the assailant was, but what do you think?
