Eye of the Sahara may not be a location that is haunted or supernaturally active, but this unique landscape in Mauritania definitely stands out to those who see it. Officially known as Richat Structure, this canyon that spans nearly 50 km across is a wonder to witness on the remote Adrar Plateau in Africa’s Sahara Desert. It’s most often described as looking just like a bullseye or even an eye, hence the name. Despite scientific experts believing it was a large originally left by a meteorite near the beginning of time, no rocky substances or minerals have ever been found in the surrounding terrain. Because it’s so enormous, it’s best viewed from higher in Earth’s atmosphere, or even in Outer Space. With its concentric circular rings, it was previously thought to have some type of connection to the mythical lost city of Atlantis. However, most geologists today have come to the general consensus that it’s actually a natural dome that has undergone millennia of deep erosion that was elevated to the surface from our planet’s inner core by massive amounts of molten rock. Throughout evolution, tons of environmental factors, like wind and water, led to the many layers inside being carved out at various speeds to create the distinct pattern of arcs and rings that define it.
