Bunny Man Bridge is a railroad structure near Clifton, Virginia that’s carried a brutal urban legend ever since the turn of the 20th century. Officially called Colchester Overpass, the legend states that a transport bus crashed at that spot after an asylum shut down. One of the inmates, Douglas Griffon, allegedly escaped and settled in the woods. The moniker stuck from him supposedly eating, killing, and hanging rabbit corpses from the surrounding trees. It’s widely believed that Bunny Man’s vengeful spirit returns every Halloween to attack anyone who gets too close around midnight. However, the story actually comes from 2 incidents reported by police in Fairfax County in October 1970. First, a young couple was alone in their car while parked on Guinea Road in Burke, when a man donning white suit and rabbit ears loudly scolded them for trespassing and threw a hatchet through their car window. Second, just a week and a half later, a security guard happened to discover a man wearing a similar bunny-eared costume who was chopping at a newly constructed home’s porch with a hatchet. Truth be told, the actual crime spree took place several miles away, but the remoteness of the bridge/tunnel somehow became the center of the legend in the decades to follow as the focal point.
