Windsor Castle first opened in 1070 by William the Conqueror, just 4 years after the Battle of Hastings. Strategically situated atop an elevated chalk ridge along the Thames River, the structure was designed to be a motte-and-bailey fortress with a timber stockade that would protect against invasions from the opposite direction. Bodies of water around it had been utilized by the Saxons for hunting purposes, as well as prior royal occupancy nearby in Old Windsor. Shortly after being established, King Henry I was the first monarch to actually live there, in 1110. However, just 60 years later, his successor, King Henry II, replaced the original wood foundation with stone and Round Tower. Future leaders, such as King Henry III and King Edward III later converted what was originally a military fortress into a grand Gothic royal palace. Being the oldest and largest castle residence in the world, it served as a royal residence for almost a full millennium. This factor, as well as being where the rulers died and were buried, Windsor Castle is well-known to be among England’s most haunted locations. Spirits of Queens Elizabeth and Victoria have been frequently reported, as have those of King Henry VIII; King George III; and King Charles I. Nearly the entire premises has some type of paranormal legend or story behind it.
