Kongamato (translated to “over turner of boats) is a massive avian creature reputed to exist in the southern and central regions of the African continent. Originally adapted from local lore by the native Kaonde tribe, this cryptid could literally be a living legend in Congo, Zambia, and parts of Angola. Thought to dwell in remote marsh and swamplands, it’s long been feared for its violent unpredictable behaviors. The idea first caught Westerners’ attention in 1923 when Frank Melland, a British naturalist, documented sightings of a strange animal in his book. When local chiefs were shown photographs and pictures, they immediately identified the subject as this beast. However, the pictures were actually of prehistoric Pterodactyls. This suggests a primitive species has adapted to modern times. However, more scientific explanations include other large waterfowl that are found there, such as saddle-billed storks. These creatures are clearly enormous and wild, but could there be more to the story than we currently know?
