Haunted Emily’s Bridge

Emily’s Bridge (properly named “Historic Gold Brook Bridge”) is a wood carved structure in Stowe, Vermont since 1844. It was built by local craftsman John W. Smith to make transport of farming and agricultural equipment more manageable in the highly rural small-town area. Spanning roughly 50 feet in length and just 17 feet wide, the bridge is maintained by a single-lane Howe truss wooden system, as that was standard practice back in the 19th century for carpenters to construct much easier and more standardized. At first, during less populated times, local horse-drawn carriages and buggies used the road to get from one area to another for all aspects of daily life and work, including as a trade route. However, this registered historic site also is most infamous for a mysterious incident in the mid-1800s. According to local lore, a young woman named Emily arrived onsite to rendezvous on plans with her fiancée to elope. However, her beau never showed up. Now feeling a massive rush of grief and dread, Emily ended up hanging herself from the rafters within the structure. This story first came out in the 1960s or 1970s, but still technically unconfirmed as to whether or not it’s the truth. No physical records of any such lady named Emily there exist to this day. Skeptics say that it’s nothing more than a creepy tale to tell in front of a campfire. Regardless, those who drive or pass by frequently experience the spirit of a vengeful female entity who clearly doesn’t want company and does whatever necessary to shoo everyone away. When people stop or park their vehicles nearby, they return to find strange claw marks imprinted on the outside and/or windows. It has become a popular tourist attraction in an otherwise rural farming community.
