Haunted French Isle

Mont Saint-Michel came into existence in the year 708 as a type of peaceful and isolated spot for worship and public gatherings. Archbishop supposedly appeared in Saint Aubert’s dream and ordered him to build a sanctuary on a tidal rock for religious purposes. Originally called Mont Tombe, the name was changed to what we know it as today after the scope of the location came into view. Over 2 centuries later, it grew into a larger Norman monastery with its own village and town around it. It’s thought to have been a holy site for pilgrimage ever since for Benedictines. Having seen over a millennium’s worth of hostility, fighting, and brutal incarcerations gave the island an eerie vibe that has led it to be considered quite haunted. Back in its heyday, the rocky landscape has also been a type of necropolis, clearly leading to its roots in darkness. This stone fortification was built primarily for defense and keeping those who don’t belong out. Thousands of slaughters and extreme acts of violence permeated the area, and strange apparitions and mysterious vocalizations are still reported to this day. The treacherous terrain and architecture can give visitors a false sense of what they see and hear in the air around them. The building is literally filled with maze-like narrow corridors with echoing walls that can easily disorient newcomers not used to it. Hallucinations are also quite common there. With its years of a cruel environment filled with violence and bloodshed, it’s no wonder that this place has such a dark reputation.
