What’s lurking underwater in Iceland?

lagarfljot worm.jpg

Lagarfljót worm monster has supposedly been a significant part of local Icelandic lore for generations, but it’s beginning may date back to a 19th century folk tale about a young female having attached a mysterious small worm-like creature to a gold ring in a linen chest as a way to possibly get rich quick. However, a strange twist of fate caused the creature to grow to a massive and horrifying size. Out of sheer panic, the girl proceeded to throw the entire compartment into Lagarfljot River on the east side of Iceland. Unbelievably, the beast just kept growing and spewing venom. Locals were completely terrified of what was occurring. Another story tells that the monstrous animal has swam in that lake since 1345. Often compared to the Loch Ness Monster, this cryptid was finally captured on video in 2012, or was it? Local farmer Hjörtur Kjerúlf was the person behind the camera, and it was even featured on several prominent series at the time. The creature looked long and serpentine while undulating through the frigid water. Authorities tested the video and deemed it to be 100% authentic, although still unsure of what it was. Skeptics, cynics, and conspiracy theorists had a field day and widely felt that this was either an elaborate hoax or a mysterious anomaly. They thought it was nothing more than loose debris that got caught in the current. Tests were run to determine if it could be something manmade or natural. Experts and locals still today hotly debate on what this thing could be. It literally brings a huge boost in tourism to the Arctic island and its remote shores.
