Have you ever heard a voice trying to lure you somewhere that you couldn’t identify? Irish lore tells of an entity that does just that, but it’s not trying to be a friend. The legend of the Banshee is one of doom and gloom. Dating as far back as the 8th century, these cryptids may seem like fairies. But the truth is so much darker. They are actually trying to warn you of impending disaster or tragedy. Someone lost and alone out in the world may long to hear the call of the Banshee, but it may be their end. These creatures are said to live underground and wish to serenade some unlucky person to join them in the netherworld. Hearing this mournful wail is believed to be an omen that death or peril is imminent. While we may picture a beautiful young woman, the creature may actually be a haggard old woman with red eyes or other demonic-type features. However, there is some light to this tale. While often thought to be the bearer of bad news, it’s possible that they may simply just appear as a sign of respect to our dearly departed. So always remember to heed the warning and be more careful about who or what you experience blindly.
