Santa Cruz Mystery Spot first came into being in 1939 when local George Prather acquired a stretch of woodland that he planned to situate as his own summer cabin. What ended up being built amongst the redwood trees was actually something much bigger and more public. Upon becoming the sole proprietor of the area, surveyors whom George hired began noticing weird readings on their compasses as well as a sense of vertigo and confusion along the terrain. In fact, the entire property started tilting or shifting at unusual angles around the foundation. Just a year after buying the land, it became a major attraction for natives and tourists to flock to, in hopes of discovering the mysteries of science that went on there. Management currently markets as either a 150-foot gravitational anomaly or some type of buried of spacecraft. On the other hand, many scientists and skeptics think it’s nothing more than a classic “gravity hill” that relies on forced perspective, including heavily slanted walls; angled floors; and a crookedly built cabin to deceive our brains, ears, and eyes with optical illusions that make people appear to change height or objects look like they are rolling uphill. So what’s really going on in Santa Cruz?
