For over a century, legends have been told about a dangerous cryptid lurking high in the mountains of Colorado. Lumberjacks and mountaineers have long warned hiking amateurs of Slide Rock Bolter. It was Minnesota-based naturalist William Cox who first brought official knowledge the creature to light in his 1910 book about undocumented creatures and animals still out there. This terrifying beast is often described as a large marine-type mammal who lives in high elevations on land and has a massive head, mouth, and forked tail with giant grab-hooks. According to lore, the Bolter latches onto mountain ridges that are steeper than 45 degrees, lying in wait for unsuspecting tourists or hikers to encroach on its territory. That’s when the creature is said to release its grip and slide down like an avalanche to scoop and swallow its victims. Skeptics attribute the tale to nothing more than a fun but creepy story to tell newcomers, or even a cautious warning to fantastically explain other natural disasters that could occur in the mountains.
