Petra, Jordan is not a place that many outside the know have completely heard of. Those familiar with Indiana Jones probably know of its existence as the supposed location of the Holy Grail. Stemming from a Greek term meaning “rock” or “stone, that’s literally what this location is. The entire town was literally carved from the rock formations there by the Nabateans, dating back to the 4th century BCE. In ancient times, Petra was a central meeting point for trade routes throughout the Middle East. According to archaic records, the nomadic Bedouin people carved this town from the massive sandstone cliffs in the area without any modern tools or machinery at their disposal. However, these formations are huge, even for what we have today. Supernatural entities known as “djinns” are believed to have actually done this carving and engraving with their own hands. For believers, this remote location in the desert may also be haunted by the ghosts of its prehistoric past. The main structure is called “the Treasury”, and secrets from within are still being discovered in our generation. These dark caverns were meant to hold the dead in hidden chambers and tombs. Both locals and outside visitors often experience unusual sounds emanating from around the area. Unfortunately, Petra has seen its fair share of looters and grave-robbers as well. Many skeptics consider noises heard as nothing but mere echoes from the wind bouncing through the canyon walls. While that is possible, it’s highly unlikely to explain everything that happens there.
