Fort Knox sits in the coastal town of Prospect, Maine as a one-time bastion that shielded the nearby Penobscot River Valley in the mid-1800s from invasions by the British during times of war. Construction began in 1844 and lasted about 25 years. It sits in a harbor very close to the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. The Aroostook War initially made the region more vulnerable to outsiders attacking. Named in honor of America’s first Secretary of War, the site saw activity from the Civil War and Spanish-American War, although no actual fighting occurred onsite. The first fortification to be built solely out of granite was officially decreed as excess land and sold to the state, prior to being registered as a National Park Historic Site in the early 1900s. As is expected of a military barracks set up as a result of tragedy, the place is widely believed to be haunted to this day. Its dark history makes it a location that paranormal experts flock to. Shadow figures, apparitions, disembodies sounds and voices, and even phantom scents in the air are all commonly reported. Arguably the most prevalent ghost seen and/or heard is that of Sergeant Leopold Hegyi, who was once the man charged with patrolling the base. He did so with an iron fist and continues as such in the afterlife. He doesn’t take too kindly to other people visiting his fort. Mike was employed there and passed away as it was being built. Both spirits are associated with the aromas of tobacco and cigars, as well as heavy footsteps heard when nobody is around. Elizabeth lived there prior to the fort’s existence. She is more amicable but can be quite interactive and/or calmly physical. Public tours can be arranged, and there’s even an actual gathering in autumn for paranormal enthusiasts to investigate the cold and dark interior and exterior.
