Visitor from Olden Days in Iowa

As far back as 1903, the stunned population of the small town of Van Meter, Iowa have reported a creature to have been a real menace to society. Over the course of several autumn evenings, a large avian animal was reportedly spotted because of its unusual features of a putrid odor given off in its presence and enormous body and wings, often compared to being part bat, part humanoid, and even similar in build to a kangaroo. Allegedly, a distinctive horn on its head gave it the ability to flash a vivid beam of light in its wake to distract anyone from interfering with it. Debates continue today about the validity of the legend as well as what the real explanation could be. Even though multiple rounds of ammo were fired at the supposed cryptid, it still was unable to be felled. Locals were desperate and terrified to get rid of this thing that invaded their territory. It could have been a pterosaur-like animal that, somehow, survived extinction. It was given the somewhat generic name of “Van Meter Visitor”. Nobody knew its true intentions but the worst was feared, believing that this creature could even be some type of demonic entity out to do great harm. It’s believed that, in fear, those hunting down the monster were able to track it to an abandoned coal mine outside the city, where it was shuttered and has been ever since. So what really happened in this small close-knit Midwest township? Was it a massive bird or even an alien from beyond our planet? This type of cryptid has been seen before. Think Mothman. At the end of the day, something took place that still remains unclear today. What other reasonable explanations could there be?
